Bowerman 5K was never in Alan Webb’s plans

After his workout Friday at Nike Headquarters, Alan Webb dispelled the notion that he ever intended to make the Bowerman 5K road race his comeback to competition.

“I will go on record as saying I was never planning on doing that race,” Webb said. He is keenly aware that his absence from the starting line caused some ripples in the running community.

Webb did a promotional video that seemed to indicate that he was going to run in the event, held last weekend on the Nike campus. Webb attended the event, just didn’t run in it.

Instead, the American record holder in the mile will run a 1,500 meters race in London on Aug. 14. Webb underwent surgery on his Achilles tendon last December and then had a stress fracture during the spring. Those ailments wiped out most of his 2010 season, but he has been ramping up his training to prepare for racing.

He’s eager to get back into the mix.

“For sure,” Webb said. “A little nervous, though. Because it’s been a while. I feel like I’m ready for something. It’s just kind of … baby steps.”

I am anxoiusly waiting for the rusults of Alan’s come back race. I really have no expectations for him. I’ll just be glad to see his return to racing. The past year had to be tough for him. I predict that, thanks to Alberto, we will see a very consistant Alan Webb. Slowly at first but steady progress much like Galen. A good coach can mean so much. There is so much more to coaching than a method of training. I discovred that when I ran for Tabori when I was past my prime.

I think the event promoter should have made it more clear that Webb was not planning to run the race. While it was clear that the video wasn’t real (he wasn’t really on the phone with Salazar) it wasn’t 100% clear that he wasn’t planning to run the race. For a guy that has been out of racing as long as Webb has, a low-key road 5k would be a plausible opener. The amount of interest people had trying to track Webb’s results show people are interested how he does. Good marketing, but maybe not fair to track fans to not clarify his plans
