Dathan Ritzenhein recovering from post-operative wound infection

by Jim McDannald on August 16, 2011

Wondering what Dathan Ritzenhein has been up to lately?

Ritz revealed in a RunnerSpace.com recorded Q&A session with high school runners, that he is recovering from a post-operative wound infection.  The former 5000 meter record holder underwent surgery on his Achilles this past March.  A post-operative infection led to a second surgery and a slow healing wound.

Though able to run now, he must wear a protective boot and utilize a special wound healing device in between training sessions.  The device called a Wound V.A.C. helps promote tissue growth.  I’ll spare the details for those of you with weak stomachs, but for those who are interested here’s a link to how the Wound V.A.C. works.

I had to wear a WOUND VAC last July for post-surgery skin graft to excised tissue.   Typically they are used to help ensure a skin graft “lives” in a new location and speeds up wound recovery.  Infections post-surgery is serious stuff
