Evan Jager of OTC Elite/Portland took the win at the Mt. Sac Relays steeplechase breaking Marc Davis’ meet record in 8:26.14.
Jager, a member of 2009 World Championship 5000m team, looked impressive throughout the event. Following the early lead of previous US champ, Dan Huling, Jager bolted to the lead with 1000m to go and never looked back.
His winning time was good for an Olympic Trials ‘A’ & Olympic Games ‘B’ standard.
Jager told Flotrack in a post race interview that he’s been practicing hurdles two or three times per week since last October. Along with Jerry Schumacher, Jager is being coached in the event by two-time US steeplechase Olympian, Pascal Dobert.
The former Wisconsin Badger will race the steeplechase at Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invitational next weekend & June’s Olympic Trials.
With such a strong debut, the future looks bright in the event for the Illinois native and could provide him the best opportunity to represent the red, white and blue in London this summer.
