Galen Rupp tripped and fell with three laps left in Friday's 5,000 meters at the Diamond League meet in Monaco. Here is a view of the rash on his right shoulder after the fall.
Not sure if this photo of Galen Rupp’s red shoulder comes from the crash he sustained in Friday’s race or the floor of the airport terminal he slept in. (See below).
Just kidding. This picture was definitely taken after Rupp was tripped up and fell with three laps left in the 5,000 meters at Herculis, site of Friday’s Diamond League meet in Monaco.
He was on personal record pace at the very least. Soon after Rupp left the race, Portland-based runner Chris Solinsky appeared to be shoved off the track and into some potted plants.
Oh by the way, Mo Farah broke the British record with 12:53.11 and Bernard Lagat broke the U.S. record in 12:53.60.
Where would Rupp or Solinsky finished?
Alberto Salazar, who took this picture, also texted to say:
“Scratched up and sore but upbeat, ran good hard workout after, not tired. Has to learn to stay out of trouble.”
Another hard lesson.

I think that American distance runners… particularly those based in or near Eugene have a tendency to get in to trouble at the international meets. As a kid growing up in Eugene back in the 70′s-80′s, I noticed the same thing. We’d all be fine running/competing with each other, but as soon as we’d get to an international meet, it was total carnage!
Ouch!!!!! Way to go though not letting it get him down! Keeping a proper perspective is always difficult when your emotions and adrenaline are running high! Working out after the fall was the best thing he could done! He may or may not have been pushed/tripped but he’ll be back for sure! Keep pushing for that sub 13! Having said that though, Diamond League officials need to watch for this kind of thing a bit closer. If certain athletes cannot abide by the rules of sportsmanlike conduct during a race (and after) then they need to get the hell of the track!
Where would Rupp or Solinsky have finished? Behind Farah, Lagat, Koech, Merga, Bekele, etc.
I am sick and tired of the incessant excuses made by our native born US runners. Why is it that you rarely see an African or naturalized US citizen from Africa get knocked down in a race? Because they are tougher. Because they come from a background where if you don’t win, you don’t eat.
Rupp should have gotten up and kept going, and Chris Solinsky was just looking for an excuse to pull out of the race. He was barely touched!!!
American runners, please stop talking about what you are going to do and “just do it!”
Dude, man up! What a joke that Rupp & Solinsky would be “forced” out of the race. Watching the video replay, it doesn’t seem as though Solinsky was pushed…at least I didn’t see it. He bowed out of his last race early as well. One thing’s for sure, these guys better be ready for some pushing & shoving come the World Champs. Time to mature in a hurry!
I just hope next time solinsky utilizes his relatively huge build to defend himself, and i don’t mean start a slapping fight after the race. There is no reason a little guy like merga should be able to “bully” such a big dude. And i think rupp just needs to watch his step because he caused a big fall at the NYC half as well
Having watched Rupp in the Birmingham 5K, and Mo Farah’s consistant reports that Rupp is his equal in training sessions, I would think that under the right conditions Rupp: 1) Can easily break 13 minutes in the 5K, 2) Can actually fun faster than Lagat’s 12:53, 3) Can unleash a 54 sec last quarter after nearly any pace, especially world championship/olympic pace, 4) Needs to learn how to run with the lead pack in the last mile. For Galen, it’s about being smart and believing that you belong there. Having Mo Farah as a training partner should have already given Galen the confidence to know that he can sucessed on the world level. His runs in the NYC half, Birmingham indoor, USA 10K/5K (5K one day after 10K), and the Birmingham meet where he beat everyone except Farah, should give Galen the confidence to run a huge race on any stage. All American distance geeks are hoping for Galen to come through big in the world championships this year. I don’t believe he can win the 5K at worlds, but I think he’s definitely capable of medaling and the American 5K record at some point. Don’t be intimidated by the likes of Merga, Bekele, Koech etc. Mo owns them and you know you can run with Mo. Run smart and confident and you’ll be the best American born track distance runner in history. Good luck the rest of 11′ and beyond Galen.
You must either be somewhat new to the sport or have a crush on Rupp, because just because you can train with someone doesn’t mean you can race with them. Although Rupp trains with Mo he has shown no signs of being able to actually compete with him. And before you make a statement like Mo owns Bekele you really ought to do your homework, because saying that just makes you look like a fool who knows nothing about track and field.
Not one to think of Solinsky as weak, but disappointed that he bowed out. Dude needs to do what he needs to to position himself, stay in the race, and take it. He’s not intimidated out there, but all those Africans are the generals and Solinsky is the 2nd class runner. At least he is the 1st second class runner trying to ball with them. He’ll get there, but the dude needs to train with Lagat or the Afro’s and dump his Eugene boys. And who’s saying Rupp can run sub 13 or 12:50… really? Have not seen Rupp do anything of the sort to pull ahead out of a pack. He’s a robot trying to run 62′s and don’t think he can mix it up. Salazar – instead of running 62 intervals try running a 55,65,55,65,55 x5 and maybe decrease the weekly mileage below 200 so maybe the kid can have some legs. Quality baby, not quantity.
