After finishing second at a special 1500 meters at the Oregon state high school meet today, Shalane Flanagan talked about her current training and fall marathon aspirations.
The US record holder in both the 5000 and 10,000 meters, Flanagan and coach Jerry Schumacher have been trying to improve her speed and athleticism during her brief outdoor track season. The racing focus has been the 1500 meters and doesn’t look like we’ll see her in anything over a possible 5000 meters the weekend of Prefontaine. She recently ran the metric mile at the USATF High Performance Meet at Occidental College and has plans to run the same race at the New York City Diamond League Meet.
Flanagan plans to take a short break after Prefontaine and then ramp up training for a a fall marathon. While in New York for the Diamond League Meeting, she plans to announce which high profile marathon she’s elected to make her debut in this coming fall. Though she dodged the direct question today, it would be a bit surprising for her to get to New York and announce how much she’s looking forward to running Chicago or Berlin.
