Oregon women win first XC crown since 1987

Jordan Hasay and Alexi Pappas both finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Louisville, Ky. as the No. 2 Oregon Ducks rolled to win the women’s title.

And yet, somehow, meet officials made a premature announcement that Providence won the meet.

Really? I get that timing snafus can happen, and in this case it was obvious that Pappas didn’t register in the team score tabulation. Anyone standing at the finish line could have determined that Oregon beat Providence. It wasn’t really that close (114-183).

It was another tough-luck finish for Hasay, who ran great once again but came up a little short in her bid for the individual title. She finished third. Behind her, Pappas steadily moved up late, and Katie Conlon made a big charge in the final half of the race, and freshmen Allie Woodward and Annie LeBlanc did well.

Major kudos are due to coach Maurica Powell for focusing the team and preparing it to perform well on the right day.
