It was an interesting 5,000 meters that concluded the Diamond League meet in Stockholm, Sweden on Friday.
Chris Solinsky and Galen Rupp were in the mix late, charging after sub-13 minute times.
And Solinsky, who is enjoying a career-best year in 2010, made it home in 12:55.53 for a new personal best. He leap-frogged Dathan Ritzenhein and moved from third to second all-time in U.S. history. Solinsky finished fifth in the race.
And Rupp might have been with him. Video coverage of the event pulled away for a brief field event update and when it returned Rupp was gone from the race.
A text message from Alberto Salazar, which came to us second-hand, revealed this much: “Got tripped and went down hard, with less than 1K to go.”
It did not appear serious. Rupp recovered and did an interval workout.
It’s too bad things played out that way. He was running well and seemed to be headed to a significant PR.
Rupp has developed a skill for running in traffic and is usually adept at sticking very close to the runner in front of him. Somehow, he must have gotten a little bit too close. We don’t yet know who he tangled with. Mark Kosgei Kiptoo of Kenya ran 12:53.46 for the win.
In another race with local interest, Nick Symmonds was fourth and Andrew Wheating was seventh in a relatively pedestrian 800 meters. Race winner Marcin Lewandowski won in 1:45.06.
And of course, the big news of the day was Tyson Gay’s victory over a slightly-off-his-game Usain Bolt. Gay took the 100 in 9.84 seconds. Bolt was next in 9.97.
Allyson Felix led a 1-2-3 finish for the U.S. in the 200, clocking 22.41 seconds.
